Title:
EnviroAtlas - Big Game Hunting Recreation Demand by 12-Digit HUC in the Conterminous United States
Abstract:
This EnviroAtlas dataset includes the total number of recreational days per year demanded by people ages 18 and over for big game hunting by location in the contiguous United States. Big game includes deer, elk, bear, and wild turkey. These values are based on 2010 population distribution, 2011 U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) Fish, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation (FHWAR) survey data, and 2011 U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service National Visitor Use Monitoring program data, and have been summarized by 12-digit hydrologic unit code (HUC). This dataset was produced by the US EPA to support research and online mapping activities related to the EnviroAtlas. EnviroAtlas (
https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas
) allows the user to interact with a web-based, easy-to-use, mapping application to view and analyze multiple ecosystem services for the contiguous United States. The dataset is available as downloadable data (
https://edg.epa.gov/data/Public/ORD/EnviroAtlas
) or as an EnviroAtlas map service. Additional descriptive information about each attribute in this dataset can be found in its associated EnviroAtlas Fact Sheet (
https://www.epa.gov/enviroatlas/enviroatlas-fact-sheets
).
Purpose:
The map, Big Game Hunting Recreation Demand, illustrates the estimated demand for recreational hunting of deer, elk, bear, and wild turkey in the contiguous U.S. Other EnviroAtlas maps show the recreation demand for bird watching, freshwater fishing, and migratory bird hunting for each 12-digit HUC. Used together or independently, these maps can help identify the estimated demand for recreational activity to inform decisions about land conservation for hunting, fishing or bird watching. The overall goal of EnviroAtlas is to employ and develop the best available science to map indicators of ecosystem services production, demand, and drivers for the nation.
