Title: EPA Office of Water (OW): 303(d) Listed Impaired Waters by Causes of Impairment and Probable Sources
Originator: US Environmental Protection Agency, Office of Water
Publication Date: 20150501
Abstract: Under Section 303(d) of the CWA, states, territories, and authorized tribes (referred to here as states) are required to develop lists of impaired waters. These are waters that are too polluted or otherwise degraded to meet the state water quality standards. The law requires that these jurisdictions establish priority rankings for waters on the lists and develop TMDLs for these waters. Note: the CWA Section 303(d) list of impaired waters does not contain impaired waters with an established TMDL, impaired waters for which other pollution control mechanisms are in place and expected to attain water quality standards, or waters impaired as a result of pollution. For more information, please see EPA's Integrated Reporting Guidance at: http://www.epa.gov/owow/tmdl/guidance.html
Purpose: The data can be used to identify distribution of impaired waters within each state for causes of impairment of interest. The attribute information provided (e.g., cause(s) of impairment, location, waterbody name) is reported by States to EPA under CWA Section 303(d), and can be associated with the geospatial information (303(d) Listed Impaired Waters NHD Indexed Dataset found at http://water.epa.gov/scitech/datait/tools/waters/data/downloads.cfm). The attribute information can be viewed via ATTAINS available at http://www.epa.gov/waters/ir or downloaded via the AskWATERS Expert Query available at http://iaspub.epa.gov/pls/waters/f?p=ASKWATERS:MAIN_MENU. Please note that a water can be identified on a State’s 303(d) list as impaired for more than one cause of impairment and be identified as having more than one probable source. Please be mindful of this information when aggregating the attributes for analysis needs.
