All Conservation Opportunity Areas (ECO.RES.ALL_OP_AREAS)
The All_OP_Areas GIS layer are all the Conservation Opportunity Areas identified by MoRAP (produced for EPA Region 7). They designate areas with potential for forest, grassland and forest/grassland mosaic conservation. These are areas of natural or semi-natural forest land cover that are at least 75 meters away from roads and away from patch edges. OAs were modeled by creating distance grids using the National Land Cover Database and the Census Bureau's TIGER roads files.
In identifying OAs, we attempt to show relatively large landscapes where conservation action will most likely result in the best long-term benefits for a broad spectrum of environmental variables related to natural resource conservation. This layer's purpose is also to aid in developing detailed conservation plans that incorporate additional data on conservation targets and evaluate design issues such as reserve size and position.
