Title: NJDEP Streams within the ENSP Highlands Extended Boundary
Abstract: This data set is a product of the Landscape Project, a pro-active, ecosystem-level approach to the long-term protection of imperiled and priority species and their important habitats in New Jersey. An update to the DEP stream layer was completed with the DEP 2002 LU/LC classification and was incorporated into this current version of the Landscape Project (Version 3.0) within the ENSP Highlands Extended Boundary. All stream centerlines within the Highlands extended boundary were extracted from the LU/LC stream layer. All streams were assigned a unique ID. Stream centerlines within water types "ARTIFICIAL LAKES" (LU02: 5300), "STREAMS AND CANALS" (LU02: 5100) and "NATURAL LAKES" (LU02: 5200), were assigned a second ID, so that each stream could be related back to the water body in which it occurs. Streams are valued only by mussel species. Mussel occurrences within the Highlands are represented as either polygon or point feature types. All mussel point occurrences within the Highlands Region were buffered by 50 meters. Streams intersected by a 50 meter buffer or a mussel polygon occurrence, were valued for that occurrence. All valued streams were buffered by .75 kilometers upstream and downstream. In the cases where stream buffers of separate occurrences of the same species met, either upstream or downstream, the stream segments between those occurrences were also valued for that species.
Purpose: The purpose of the high_streams layer is to provide users with peer reviewed, scientifically sound wildlife data that is easily accessible and can be integrated with planning, protection and land management programs at every level of government (state, county, municipal) as well as nongovernmental conservation organizations and private land owners.
