U.S. States (Generalized) represents the 50 states and the District of Columbia of the United States joined with data from the NPDES Permit Backlog Report for the last quarter of 2009.
<purpose>This data is used as a mapping service in the US EPA Office of Waters (OW) GIS mapping services for the MyWaters Mapper application. This data was originally published by ESRI and is supplemented with OW data from the NPDES Backlog Reduction Program (https://cfpub.epa.gov/npdes/permitissuance/backlog.cfm). The data used is from the Backlog Report for the last quarter of 2009. Since 1999, EPA has tracked the issuance status (i.e., the number and percent current) and set goals for states and EPA Regions to achieve a percent current rate of 90 percent. The percent current goal today is measured as the number of facilities (major and minor) covered by individual and non-stormwater general permits.</purpose>

Recreated ArcView GIS legend file (.avl) and ArcGIS® layer file (.lyr). Copied projection file (.prj). The following steps were performed by ESRI: Extracted and generalized the features from ArcUSA 1:25M. Added demographic attributes from Summary Tape File-1A (STF-1A) data published by the U.S. Census Bureau based on the 1990 Census of Population. Added farm attributes from data published by the U.S. Census Bureau based on the 1987 Census of Agriculture. Added Pop2000 attribute from ESRI. Converted to North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83) by splitting the United States into–if present: Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands–and the 48 contiguous states (including District of Columbia); converting each to NAD83; then merging them together.
