Abstract:

Index grid of USGS 24K quadrangles for the Lower 48 United States and Hawaii. Merge of undocumented national shapefile downloaded from geocomm.com and quad shapefiles from NRCS that had additional useful attribute information. NRCS shapefiles were only collected for the Northeastern. This metadata record is a combination of metadata from NRCS and a description of EPA Region 2 process steps.

Purpose:

Vector dataset provides digital raster graphic (DRG) quad boundaries with attributes describing the quads.

Supplemental_Information:

Data were processed in the following steps by Harvey Simon of EPA Region 2 GIS on 03/10/06: 1) Downloaded individual state grid shapefiles from USDA/NRCS Gateway (https://gdg.sc.egov.usda.gov/) 2) Used ArcTools merge function to combine the different state index shapefiles for the Northeast 3) Used ArcTools dissolve function to remove duplicate grid cells 4) Edited one polygon (Chincoteague Quad) vertex to eliminate sliver gap between two cells. 5) Imported data into Oracle Spatial using R2 data conversion procedures

Visually examined for consistency in ArcMap and ArcCatalog to ensure that no slivers or duplicate polygons were created while merging a number of state shapefiles. No errors found.

Logical_Consistency_Report:

Merge of NRCS shapefiles and geocomm.com shapefiles were examined against known quad status grids for New York State and New Jersey and digital raster graphics and found to align perfectly. Data set was displayed at various extents to check for completeness. Attribute table values were compared against available data for New York State and found to be consistent.

Completeness_Report:

Data are complete for most northeastern and Great Lakes states. Rest of lower 48 and Hawaii are complete spatially, but lack full attribution that had been included in NRCS shapefiles.

Source: http://greenwood.cr.usgs.gov/pub/quad-indexes. Then NRCS-ITC converted to Lon/Lat NAD83. Forced all coordinates to nearest even increment of 7.5 minutes to remove precision problems from being re-projected. Updated quad name, add quad date field, add missing quads. Generate FIPS_C field of inside, crossing, touching counties.

Data were processed in the following steps by Harvey Simon of EPA Region 2 GIS on 03/14/06: Combined features of 1) Merged 24 K state indexes from USDA/NRCS gateway for Northeastern and GL states, and 2) Undocumented shapefile C:\WorkSpace\grids\24kgrid.shp downloaded from http://data.geocomm.com/quadindex/ Also had undefined geometry. This shapefile is for the entire US, but has less attribute content than the NRCS data. 2a) Defined projection of national 24K shapefile from geocomm.com coverage to geographic NAD83 and compared to existing DOQ index for New York State in ArcMap. Geometry appeared to overlay perfectly. 2b) Geocomm.com had duplicate polygons at state boundaries, problem from merge of individual state layers. Performed dissolve to remove duplicate polygons. 3) To collect the attributes from the NRCS Northeastern coverage, calculated new MRC field to allow join of the two coverages: Formula to calculate the new field was: UCASE((LEFT((RIGHT([QUADID],7)),5)) & "-" & (RIGHT([QUADID],2))) Joined the national shapefile to the NRCS shapefile for the NE and Great Lakes and exported to final shapefile with add ional attributes. 4) Edited NRCS metadata to reflect mix of data sources and process steps. 5) Imported data into Oracle Spatial using R2 data conversion procedures
