Federal facilities are properties owned by the federal government. This data layer provides access to Federal facilities that are Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) sites as part of the CIMC web service. The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, among other things, helps ensure that wastes are managed in an environmentally sound manner so as to protect human health and the environment from the potential hazards of waste disposal.
In particular, RCRA tightly regulates all hazardous waste from "cradle to grave." In general, all generators, transporters, treaters, storers, and disposers of hazardous waste are required to provide information about their activities to state environmental agencies. These agencies, in turn pass on the information to regional and national EPA offices. Accidents or other activities at facilities that treat, store or dispose of hazardous wastes have sometimes led to the release of hazardous waste or hazardous constituents into soil, ground water, surface water, or air. When that happens, the RCRA Corrective Action program is one program that may be used to accomplish the necessary cleanup.
In Cleanups in My Community, you can map or list RCRA Corrective Action sites that are currently undergoing corrective action, sites for which a remedy has been selected, sites for which construction has been completed, and sites where the corrective action cleanup is complete. This data layer shows those RCRA sites that are located at Federal Facilities.
Note: RCRA facilities which are not undergoing corrective action are not considered “Cleanups” in Cleanups in My Community. The complete set of RCRA facilities can be accessed via the EPA RCRA database in Envirofacts (https://enviro.epa.gov/facts/rcrainfo/search.html).

This web service was developed for the CIMC web application, which provides the public with access to data from numerous cleanup programs, although the data can generally be applied more broadly. Accidents, spills, leaks, and past improper disposal and handling of hazardous materials and wastes have resulted in tens of thousands of sites across our country that have contaminated our land, water (groundwater and surface water), and air (indoor and outdoor). EPA and its state and territorial partners have developed a variety of cleanup programs to assess and, where necessary, clean up these contaminated sites. CIMC (https://www.epa.gov/cleanups/cleanups-my-community) brings together the data from many of these cleanup programs and lets people map, list and access cleanup progress profiles for sites across the US so that people can know what is going on in their communities. Location information for EPA data provided via the CIMC web service are collected using many techniques. The processes used to collect location information for each type of data are as follows: Incidents of National Significance are derived from the official epa.gov web pages for each incident. Locations are collected for each incident individually, and may have varying accuracy. In the case where the original EPA pages did not provide a lat/long, a coordinate was placed manually based on the description provided about the site. Location information for Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) data are initially entered by the regulated facility. Location information for Brownfields data are originally entered by the Brownfields grantee. Location information for Superfund data are initially entered by the remedial project manager for each superfund site. Location information for Emergency Responses are initially entered by the On Scene Coordinator for each response. After initial data entry using the methods described above, locations are verified using a detailed process called the Facility Registry System (FRS) "Best Pick" Process. This process uses a number of routines and algorithms to validate location data for each site and to select the best location. Because locations are assigned using numerous different methods, the accuracy level assigned to the data set is EPA National Geospatial Data Policy (NGDP) Tier 10 - Data were collected using methods that have unknown accuracy (EPA NGDP Accuracy Tier 10).
